God does exist and he loves you. Mankind has been searching for the answer to this question since the beginning of time. Yet, while volumes have been written on this we still do not all agree. Many Christians like to prove God with God’s word. We believe God’s word but also know that some searching for answers see that as classic circular logic. So the question is where should we look to find whether God exists. William Lane Craig offers five reasons to believe God does exist:
- God makes sense of the origin of the universe.
- God makes sense of the fine-tuning of the universe for intelligent life.
- God makes sense of objective moral values in the world.
- God reveals himself through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus.
- God can be immediately known and experienced.
Science does not prove or disprove God. However, we can look at a host of things and see him very clearly. For instance, the universe exists and science agrees it had a beginning. Many believe that starting point was a moment in time or the “big bang”. However, science has no answer for what, or who, created that starting point. Something created the thing that triggered the universe into existence.
We then start looking at creation itself. We see an incredibly delicate balance that allows the earth to exist, humans to survive, and so on and so on. The idea that this is an “accident of nature” is so mathematically remote that many now recognize that it is not random and there must be an intelligent design at work for all of this to exist in such delicate balance. Once again, we must be honest with ourselves and ask what, or who, is at the core of that design.
When we move past nature, we look inside ourselves and wonder about our inner sense of right and wrong and whether objective moral values actually exist. If they don’t then there is no such thing as right or wrong. If they do, then where do we look for the source of those moral values. It can only be God.
Many struggle with not being able to see God and asking why doesn’t God show himself. We all believe in countless things we can’t see. More importantly, we believe in things we see happen from the things we can’t see. We don’t see things like wind or love but we certainly see the affects of those things.
We then look at where God did show himself through Jesus. Unlike the figures in every major world religion, Jesus claimed to be God. He said God exists and here I am. And once again, unlike every other religion, Jesus came to show how much God loves us and not just lay down a checklist for forgiveness, blessings and eternal life. His death and resurrection only amplify his point.
Even those that deny Jesus as God have a still small voice inside them seeking something greater than themselves. Sometimes it is voiced as purpose or meaning. When we remove all the noise, we feel the need in our hearts to answer this exact question of whether God exists.
The simple truth is God created us to know him and has surrounded us with overwhelming evidence of his existence. However, he forces no one to believe. We can look at life on earth and how it fails to exist with the smallest change to our distance from the sun, we can look at the human brain, or we can look at the biblical and historical evidence for God showing himself to us through Jesus. Whatever route you choose to find answers, we hope you will see that God reveals himself and invites you to know him personally.
