Yes, God denounces abortion for He is the giver of life and does not allow us to choose when to take life from another. Abortion has often been categorized by supporters as a female rights or pro choice issue. It was thought that a woman’s right to choose should matter more than an unborn person. It was also once thought that most abortions were just of a mass of cells and tissue and not a human being. The thought even went so far as to think that an embryo or fetus are potential human beings but not yet one.
Science has come a long way to show us what is actually happening. The moment an egg is fertilized, a human being comes into existence with twenty-three chromosomes from the mother and twenty-three chromosomes from the father combining to result in a brand-new and totally unique and distinct genetic code. In other words, a human life exists from the moment of conception.
The arguments that a fetus is not a human being have traditionally been highlighted across four different categories: size, level of development, degree of dependency and environment. The reality is that we do not disqualify someone’s humanity because they are smaller or younger than other humans, or have not developed to an average or norm. We also do not disqualify one’s humanity because a person depends on others or changes environments. We all develop differently, and most achieve an ability to live independently, but those who do not are no less human or valued any less by God.
All that said, we are not here to argue scientific claims, or state legal arguments for over-turning the law, but rather to look at the issue within the confines of God’s design for human flourishing. The bible is clear in treating the unborn as a human. They are described by personal pronouns, possess personal attributes like joy, are called children by God, and protected by the same punishment for those that injure them as if they were adults. They are also known personally by God and called by Him before birth.
We recognize that you will not find the word abortion in the bible but we see that God is active in shaping us in the womb. This does not just happen after we are born or only when we start recognizing right from wrong. God is there weaving and molding us together. That life is made in the image of God and as such is more valuable than the rest of the creative order. So regardless of the circumstances around conception, or how much time has occurred since conception, abortion always ends the life of another human. Simply put, taking that life while in the womb is taking another life. It is the murder of another life and God is absolutely clear on that whether the word abortion is used or not.
Now if you have had an abortion, or played a part in someone getting an abortion, we understand that is a traumatic event. No matter what you feel, have been told, or may believe you need to understand that God loves and offers you forgiveness. We know hearing that does not immediately make the pain go away but you need to know the truth. That truth is that God has not abandoned you and wants you to seek Him out. God doesn’t stand on the sidelines when we are lost or hurting. He comes to us and offers to meet us in our fear, our depression, our pain, and our discouragement. You may feel like you are beyond his love or abandoned but you’re not. He is right there ready to help if you will let him into your heart. We pray you will find peace, forgiveness and hope by seeking God in all cases where an unborn life is involved.
For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. Psalm 139:13-14
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; Jeremiah 1:5
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” Genesis 1:26
You shall not murder. Deuteronomy 5:17
