Yes, God cares who will be President but he cares much more about your heart. God loves you. God is all-powerful and sovereign. The Bible tells us that all authority in the world is only through God allowing it to exist. Since He rules over all things in this world, He also has ultimate authority over who becomes President.
We know God’s ways are beyond our complete understanding and His plans frequently don’t make sense to us. We also know many kings and rulers that were in power who did not honor or follow God in any way. There are numerous examples of people in positions of government power that completely ignored God and did great harm to their fellow man. God is able to use men with hard hearts to bring about change in the world and change people that have turned their backs on Him. In the end, all things will serve to glorify God – even those people and points in history that make no sense to us right now.
There is no greater example of history seeming misaligned than Jesus himself. He did not come as a man seeking political authority or power. In fact, he allowed those in power to take his life for a much greater purpose. When we look at his conversation with Pontius Pilate, Jesus says, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above.”
We are part of an ongoing story where God is revealing His eternal plan and using different people and different times in ways we can’t fully appreciate. As this all occurs, we are wise to remember our relationship to God and what He has told us about authority figures. We are to obey the laws of the land but ultimately obey God’s law above all else.
In the end, we look towards our perfect home in heaven with God. We should recognize that until that day arrives, we will be governed by imperfect men whom God can use to bring His divine will to mankind. We can also trust that God is all-knowing and his ways are higher than our desires for what government should be or who we desire to sit in positions of authority.
Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Romans 13:1
Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above.” John 19:11a
Then Jesus said to them, “Give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s.” Acts 5:21
